Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles

Nothing has been the same since Caleb Becker left a party drunk, got behind the wheel, and hit Maggie Armstrong. Even after months of painful physical therapy, Maggie walks with a limp. Her social life is nil and a scholarship to study abroad--her chance to escape everyone and their pitying stares--has been canceled. After a year in juvenile jail, Caleb's free . . . if freedom means endless nagging from a transition coach and the prying eyes of the entire town.

Coming home should feel good, but his family and ex-girlfriend seem like strangers. Caleb and Maggie are outsiders, pigeon-holed as "criminal" and "freak." Then the truth emerges about what really happened the night of the accident and, once again, everything changes. It's a bleak and tortuous journey for Caleb and Maggie, yet they end up finding comfort and strength from a surprising source: each other.

1) I chose this book truthfully because it was like the only one left on the rack for Abe books, but when I read the book it actually looked kind of interesting. EX: "Caleb Becker spent the last year in Juvenile Detention". The book is narrated by two people Maggie Armstrong and Caleb Becker, the author has the book switch point of views each chapter which makes the book very interesting to read.

2) No, I cant say I relate to either of the characters. Caleb served a year in Juvinile Hall because he was charged for drunk driving and Hit N Run on a girl in his town (maggie). I haven't done that so I really can't relate to what he is going through. Maggie is a girl and she gets hit by a car, which has never happened to me, so I really cant relate to what she's going through with her scars and pain and limp all through her senior year at high school...

3) This book is defintely worth being on the abe list, I have always hated reading but I could not put this interesting book down. It's probably one of the best books I've read in a while. The way Simone Elkeles switches off from Caleb to Maggie each chapter is amazing, she even has them run into eachother alot and you get both of thier POV's on the situation they are in. This book should stay on the list for years to come.

1) I choose this book because I had gone to see the author at one of the meet the authors at Central, and she was describing the book. Since this project, I was able to get around to actually reading the book and I truly loved it.

2) This story is narrated by two people, Caleb and Maggie. I cannot relate to Caleb's character because I have never spent time in a Juvenile Detention Center. I can sort of relate to the pain that Maggie is going through post surgery, because I have surgery before, and I can tell you from experience that it is not fun. Although I have never been hit by a car, I can relate to her (sort of) emotionally and physically.

3) This book should definitely stay on the Abe list. Once I started this book, I could not put it down. I ended up reading the book in 5 hours. I love home Simone Elkeles switches off chapters from both Maggie and Caleb's point of view. You can really under stand what each character is thinking. I am a little disappointed as to how the book ended, but then I turned the page and saw that there is a sequel coming out. I loved how Maggie and Caleb became an item, but I wasn't to pleased with the negative connotation that other characters displayed toward their affection for each other. In the end, the book was fantastic, I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good book to read, and that this book should stay on the Abe list for many years to come.

1) I chose the book Leaving Paradise because when I read the summary of the book and when it was being summarized when presented to us it sounded like a page turner and very intresting and so far thats how it has been. It talked about how two enemies would have to come together to face their fears and that defiantly caught my attention. It sounded like an interesting book and it also had very good ratings. I really liked that it was a fair amount of pages long and seemed like it would not be a problem to finish and get done with and that is why I chose the book I did.

I choose to read the book Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles because it was about two teenagers involved in a drinking and driving car accident. This is a very dangerous cause of many teenage deaths every year. I also know someone who was involved in a drinking and driving car accident. I thought that it would be interesting to read about the experience of the two teenagers life and how they are affected from this accident. Also what the relationship is between the teens due to the horrifying experience. This book seemed very appealing to me from the Abe list. It is also a quick and interesting read.

I chose “Leaving Paradise” by Simone Elkeles because while the librarians described all the books, this particular book seemed the most fascinating to me. Although my life is defiantly not as chaotic or hard as both the main characters, Maggie and Caleb, everyone in a way can relate to them because in life every person feels like an outsider at a point, experience a tragedy, and love someone. The fact “Leaving Paradise” has many surprises and the characters are so complex this is a great read to be on the Abe list. I highly suggest people read this book because I really enjoyed it.

1. I chose this book because we were required to read an ABE book for English 3 and my first choice was already taken. I didn't think the topic was going to be very interesting but after reading the first chapter I realized that the story is actually pretty good.
2. I would say I do not relate to any of the main characters. The main character Caleb gets charged with a hit and run while he was driving drunk and ends up going to jail, and the girl he hit, Maggie ended up living and still was able to walk but with a limp, so I do not connect to either of them.
3. I am not finished with the book yet, but so far its pretty good.

1) I chose this book because it had an appealing cover and an attractive name. It seemed like a good read and i have read preious books by the author.
2) No i cannot relate to any of the characters, because one of them is a delinquint while the other is a girl with serious harm done to her. I do not know what it would be like to be in theiir shoes. I can somewhat relate to caleb because of the way he thinks but only a little.
3)This book is worth being on the abe list because it was an interesting book with surprising events around every corner. I recommend it to anyone who likes a quick easy read.

1) I chose to pick this book becouse it was one a many still available to choose from, but i turned out to get lucky with a very good book. Its was one of my favorite books ive read and am looking forward to what happens in the end. What i found to be very interesting in this book that ive never see in others is how the author switches off the chapters to both of the main characters Caleb and Maggie.

2) No, i cant saw i would be able to relate to any of the characters in any real way than besides their life of going through high school. As for being locked up as Caleb was no, and for Maggie getting a serious car accident no.

3) This is a very good book that i would highly recommend to a lot of readers who like a good fast read. It is probably one of the best books i've read besides "I Am The Messenger", which is also on the Abe list. So if your in need of a good book i would suggest picking one from the Abe list thats filled with im sure many really interesting reads.

I chose this book because one of my friends said it was one of her favorites and it was a suspenseful love story. I don't really relate to the characters, but
I could really imagine what Leah might had been going through, since her brother Caleb took the blame for her accident in hitting her best friend Maggie. He had to go to the juvenile hall for a whole year for doing nothing at all, and putting myself in Leah's position, I just could not handle that guilt. Overall this book was one of my favorite's because of all the suspense and surprising twists in the plot. This is definately an Abe-Award worthy book!

I chose this book because I've read a Simone Elkeles book before, Perfect Chemistry, and it was really good so i decided to try this one, and just like in Perfect Chemistry i like the way that she goes back and forth between the two main characters, its a really good book. I also chose this book because the plot line seemed really interesting to me.

Truthfully, I do not think I relate to any of the characters in the book. This is because Caleb is being portrayed as basically the bad guy during the whole novel, saying he got drunk, drove a car drunk and ran his sisters best friend over and did a hit and run. He was ultimately sent to jail for a year. I would never do such a thing in life and I feel that his personally as someone ho is not afraid of anything does not relate to me either. I also think I do not relate to Maggie because she is a very quiet girl who ends up loosing all of her friends after the accident. I normally am not a quiet girl and I also have amazing friends that would never befriend me if i got into an accident like Maggie, I think I have better judgement than her. Overall, I really enjoyed reading the book and getting to know the characters while reading and though I do not think i relate to anyone of them, I really enjoyed reading about them.

After reading the novel, I do not relate to the main characters, Maggie or Caleb. Because of the accident, both of the characters have faced very difficult situations. Maggie has a bad limp in her leg and thinks of herself as an unluckiest person with very little friends, and Caleb has spent a year in juvenile jail serving the punishment for the night of the accident. Caleb was a very careless, criminal teenage boy. Maggie's social life becomes lonely and she feels herself out of place in the company of others around her. Myself on the other hand, I am confident, optimistic, and I like to spend my time around others. I have not been in a situation like these two which makes it difficult for me to relate myself to either of them.

1. I choose the book because the two books i really wanted were already taken. It's not like I didn't want to read the book, it just wasn't at the top of my list. The book appealed to me because it dealt with real problems. Most books that are about high are so vapid and lifeless. This had a more serious tone and I felt obligated to read it.

2. I can't relate to the character specifically, an example would be hitting a person with my car or getting hit by a car. I can relate to Caleb by taking the blame for something that I didn't do. Not to the extent that Caleb did though. My brother and I were playing and he knocked over a vase. I took the blame because I'm his older sister. I can relate to Maggie because i had to deal with the struggle of overcoming an injury. Not deep scars on my leg, just a concussion and a couple of stitches on my face.

3. I think this book is completely worthy of being on the ABE list. I highly recommend it. It deals with real problems and it kept me reading. When you think of high school books you think overdramatic teens with stupid problems. This story shows a lot of problems that teens deal with: underage drinking, social awkwardness, and fitting in. It is nice to see that there is a book that addresses these problems. Last is i could not put this book down. I haven't read a book in a while that i actually enjoyed. Most books you read in school are old and speak in a different language. The writing in the book is very familiar and it's down to earth. I would recommend this book to many people.

1) I chose this book because over the summer I read a book called 13 Reasons Why, which had the same sort of guilt scenario and mystery pertaining to a tragic accident (a suicide instead of a car accident). I also chose this since the concept seemed rather interesting to see how both characters lives would be affected after the accident.
2)I do not feel like I can truly relate to any of the characters in this book, given the circumstances of Juvenile detention and car accidents. While I have not undergone experiences like these, I do feel I can relate somewhat having felt sorrow at certain points in my life, mostly with close relatives passing away. I feel sad for Maggie given that she suffered through the accident and was forced to confront her fears of the driver of the car.

I cant relate to caleb. Caleb is a juvenile delinquint and likes to live his life a little bit more wildly. He was also in a DUI and i cannot relate to that. While i can somewhat relate to MAggie. She just finished having surgery. I know what that feels like and what she is going through since i just had surgery.

I think theres a point in time where anyone can relate to Maggie and Caleb, theyre both going through a really hard time and feel as if they dont belong. Everyone has had the feeling of being an outsider at one point. Although if you got really specific, no i cannot relate except for the fact i dont live with my dad, just like Maggie.

Yes, I do believe that Perfect Chemistry deserves to be on this years Abe list. Although the book is kind of slow towards the beginning up until the middle it somewhat needs to be to explain what you need to know, but once the book gets going it is really good. Perfect Chemistry gets you prepared for the sequels that are coming out soon, those should be very good as well.

3)I do believe that Leaving Paradise was worthy of being on the ABE list this year because of its compelling storyline and concept. "What if" situations always seem to ponder us, and with the case being an encounter with Caleb, who ran Maggie over with his car, it's interesting to watch how the two counter each other during his return from a juvenile detention center. Seeing viewpoints from both sides also caught my attention, the story went very in-depth on how both Caleb and Maggie view life from experiencing terrible events. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a first person look at how life can change so suddenly when the past catches up with you, and I recommend this book stays on the ABE list for other people to enjoy its complexity and surprises.

1. This book seemed interesting when I read the story summarization. I really want to see how one bad decisions can affect one's life. And most importantly, how you can overcome hardship and learn to move on and learn from your mistake. The characters of Leaving Paradise are about our age. Therefore, I think i could relate well to them.

Claudia Choe_Timmons_per1 said...

#2 I cannot relate to any of the characters in this book. I've never went to prison like Caleb, or had severe physical problem like Maggie. However, I can relate to both Caleb and Maggie as they attempt to get through their internal problems and move on with their lives. I admire their strength to go back to school and ignore those who spread false rumor or stories about them. It must be hard, especially during your adolescent years to deal with people always isolating and treating you like an outsider. And all highschool teens had moments where they felt isolated in a specific event, place, or gathering. I went through that once, but I learned to ignore and move on with my life. And both Caleb and Maggie realize that throughout this book.

#3 I definitely think this book should be in the Abe's list. Teens can relate to this topic and the characters easily. Also, this book is both entertaining and it shows real, in depth aspects about life. It's not like those shallow chick flick books that always deals with school dramas. This book talks about real life troubles people face and it teaches us how to survive. I think anyone who reads this book can learn a valuable lesson. This book could teach teenagers to survive and realize more important aspects in life than just school.

1) I decided to read this book because the cover looked really interesting and because the book summery really captured my attention. I haven't read a book like it before, so it was a change.

2) I don't see myself relating to any of the characters in the book because Caleb was convicted of hitting a girl with his car while driving drunk, and went to juvenile detention, and I haven't done either of those. I don't relate to the other character Maggie because I don't want to study abroad and because I have never been hit by a car before.

3) This book definitely deserved to be on the Able List because overall it was a very good book, and a quick read. Even though I can't relate myself to the characters. it was a good book that kept me interested. Plus, the plot of the book is very different to other books that have been published.

4) And I liked the book because it was an easy read.

Yes i do think that the book Leaving Paradise should be on the Abe book list for the future years to come. This book was a very quick and intense read. It is also a book that creates interest for both guys and girls. Leaving paradise pulls the reader in because it forces those to not be able to put the book down. This book can also be a learning device for some because it tells the life and aftermath of two teenagers from the mistake one made with a poor decision. It can show teens a different presepective and the effects to making the wrong choice. It is definitely a book that should remain on the Abe's reading book list.

Yes, I defiently think that Leaving Paradise is worthy of being on the Abe list. First off, the overall summary caught my attention out of all the books. While I was reading the book I could not stop, it was defiently a page turning story. I think it was a very well-written book with events that kept being thrown at the reader to make us want to keep reading. Over all, Simone Elkeles did an amazing job on putting together a great story about teenagers and everything they had to go through throughout their teenage years. I can not wait for the sequal of this book and I give it 5 stars.

I definatly recommend that "Leaving Paradise" remain on the Abe books list because the characters are very complex and at the end there is a twist so keeps the book livid and interesting. I was really suprised at the end of the novel because i ended up liking Caleb. This book truely shows things are not as what they appear and people judge too quickly.
